Warnings from Katrina and Rita?

The experts on global warming have built their charts based on empirical data from the deep snows of Antarctica. A lot of work goes into gathering and displaying these data and it gets published in places most citizens don’t read or see. The published information can get very detailed and hard to follow and may lead to skepticism. Well here is something that might be a little more understandable.

There probably aren’t many people that have not heard about the recent hurricanes, their strength, and the horrific disasters that followed landfall. Most probably know from their local weather person, that hurricanes get their strength from the waters they form over and eventually die after they hit land. Most probably know that the storms are named from an alphabetical list that changes each year. What most probably don’t know is how the number of named storms has changed over the recent past. The chart below provides a view of that change – and it is quite dramatic.

Is our world getting warmer or not?

The graphic above was researched and developed by Jim Vogas, a coauthor for this blog.

Scientists say they are observing increases in the windspeed and the duration of hurricanes — though not necessarily the total number of storms

  • A close-up of recent years is below.  Notice that since 1998, there has not been a single year with less than 12 storms.  Before 1998, it was normal to have less than 12 storms per year.

  • Does the number of tropical storms per year run in cycles?

This past weekend, I heard some conservatives on television say that we should not worry about the increased number of storms because they have always run in up and down cycles.

While it is true that the number on storms have run in up and down cycles, the 10 year averages in the past (going back to 1851) have been around 8 storms per year. Since 2000, the average number of tropical storms per year has been 16. This amount of tropical activity in the past 10 years is unprecedented.

  • Percent years per decade when the number of storms exceeded 12 per year:
    1900-1909 - 0%
    1910-1919 - 10%
    1920-1929 - 0%
    1930-1939 - 20%
    1940-1949 - 10%
    1950-1959 - 10%
    1960-1969 - 10%
    1970-1979 - 0%
    1980-1989 - 10%
    1990-1999 - 50%
    2000-Present - 90%

For the 90 years from 1900 to 1989, the number of storms exceeded 12 per year in less than 8% of those years. In the 1990s, the number of storms exceeded 12 per year for 50% of those years. Since the year 2000, the number of storms exceeded 12 per year for 90% of those years.
